The Crinan Canal is a cutting which runs across the top of The Mull of Kintyre, linking Loch Fyne to the Sound of Jura. Constructed by Telford in 1801, it cut the journey around the Mull from over eighty miles to a much less taxing nine miles. The tow-paths which run alongside the canal are beautifully maintained providing peaceful scenic walks all year round, although care must be taken with young children as there is always a lurking danger with deep water and sheer unprotected banks. Along the length of the Canal, lock-keepers cottages can be found scattered at strategic points such as the T junction where the B8025 single track road to Kilmartin crosses the canal by means of it's own sliding road bridge. A puzzled crowd of onlookers is always guaranteed when the keeper emerges to slide the bridge back out of the path of passing pleasure craft..

Connel Bridge is a single file road bridge which crosses the mouth of Loch Etive giving superb views of the Falls of Lorn which are at their most impressive as the tides rush in and out through the narrow channel under the bridge. It was originally built to carry the Oban to Ballachulish railway, which it did until 1966 when the railway was closed, and a toll road. The traffic is controlled by traffic signals at each end, preventing the tourist from stopping on the bridge - if you want a photo of the falls it is best to park in the village and walk across the bridge at your leisure.
